Hailing from the suburban communities of Connecticut, the high schoolers, Kicking Daisies could have easily let conformity and complacency become their default strategies. Instead, though, members Caitlin and Carly Kalafus, Duran Visek and Ben Spremulli they were buzzing through basement walls, charging through stereo speakers, penning catchy tunes and practicing laboriously. The teenage pop-rock band is racking up ardent followers by conforming only to their own vision and now by making a powerful statement against bullying.
"There's just something about this campaign that connects with us. We think it's a very relatable topic, and a lot of kids, including our own fans, deal with bullying every day. So we're standing up for those kids. We're kickin' bullying!"~ states the band members of Kicking Daisies
The Rocky Marciano/BULLYING...We're Kickin' It National Campaign is designed to enhance students' lives by helping to improve the overall school and social climate. Kickin' It provides schools, students, families and communities with resources, assistance, guidance and support to effectively deal with the effects of bullying and negative behaviors.
The multi-component campaign is created to empower and inspire students, urging them to express negative feelings and emotions through their positive outlet. Whether they turn to sports, fashion, arts, animal care, music, etc., Kickin' It provides students the access and resources to those outlets where they can turn negativity into positive energy and healthy behavior.
Operating from their center, graciously donated by the 3-2 Count Athletic Facility in Freehold NJ, Kickin' It offers after school programs, mentor and leadership workshops, summer camps and weekly events. Due to the overwhelming growth Kickin' It is currently trying to find a larger permanent location within Monmouth County.
Kickin' It understands especially with bullying, peer pressure is a core factor. Kickin' It shines a light on positive students doing positive things, such as Kicking Daisies showing other students that when they stay focused and believe in themselves, they too can achieve anything they desire.
Kickin' It aligns with celebrities from various outlets that engage the interest of students from athletes, sport legends, actors and TV personalities to artists and musicians. Kickin' It has a vast list of celebrity supporters and Kicking Daisies will join the wide range of musicians such as David Homyk, Jimmy Gnecco and Black Label Society (to name few) who are Campaign Supporters.
"Having celebrities with diverse interests allows Kickin' It to reach countless students, not just a small group." ~states KI spokesperson Former Miss Teen NJ USA Erica Szymanski. Many celebrity supporters share their experience and opinions about bullying through campaign supporter cards. Kickin' It distributes tens of thousands of these cards per month to schools and students across the country. The Kicking Daisies campaign banner and supporter cards have just been sent to the students of P.S 57 in Staten Island NY.
In some cases students have had the opportunity to personally interact and speak to the celebrity supporters; during schools visits, community events, fundraisers and through Kickin' Its Q, A & Inspire Program. When a student has a compelling story, needs encouragement and/or inspiration KI arranges for the students and the celebrity supporters to interact. Kicking Daisies will now be included in this campaign program as well.
"Kickin' It not only raises awareness, the campaign creatively develops ways to attract, involve, empower and inspire students to stay positive about themselves." ~states KI Spokesperson Actor Josh Flitter, who visits the students at the KI Center, sharing his story, answering their questions and inspiring them to stay on their path.
