This fascinating display of the Armenian-born painter's work includes sculptures as well as paintings and drawings created throughout his lifetime.

Running until May 3rd, the exhibit should give a sense of how the man channelled the influence of Cezanne and Picasso into his early still life works, but was able to create his own form of realism in later pieces.

"First in Boston and, after 1924, then in New York, he studied the Modern European masters in books and galleries, teaching himself art by combining this with art classes," explained the venue.

Some of his most famous work will be on display at this exhibition, with the two versions of The Artist and His Mother, as well as the "layered and translucent" Waterfall all available to view among others.

The Tate Modern describes Gorky - who lived from 1904 to 1948 - as one of the most powerful American painters of the century alongside other artistic heavyweights such as Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko - with paintings by both also on show in the building.

Tickets cost GBP10 and can be bought online or at the box office, with a free brochure included in this price.
